On November 22, 2024, the German Marshall Fund’s Eastern Partnership (EaP) Alumni Forum convened at the Radisson Blu Iveria Hotel in Tbilisi, Georgia. The Forum brought together alumni from across the EaP region and the European Union. George Melashvili, the President of the Europe-Georgia Institute, moderated the introductory panel at German Marshall Fund’s Eastern Partnership (EaP) Alumni Forum featuring the Ambassadors of the US, EU and Germany.
The event celebrated the diversity, resilience, and leadership cultivated by GMF’s leadership programs over the past four decades. The forum provided a platform for critical discussions on regional and transatlantic challenges, under the overarching theme of fostering Euro-Atlantic integration and addressing pressing geopolitical concerns.
George Melashvili Moderates Opening Panel
The forum commenced with a vibrant series of activities, culminating in the first panel titled “The Euro-Atlantic Aspirations of the EaP Region”. George Melashvili moderated the introductory panel at German Marshall Fund’s Eastern Partnership (EaP) Alumni Forum featuring the Ambassadors. Moderated by George Melashvili, President of the Europe-Georgia Institute and a GMF Policy Designers Network (PDN) alum, the panel featured distinguished speakers, including:
- H.E. Ernst Peter Fischer, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany
- H.E. Pawel Herczynski, Ambassador of the European Union to Georgia
- H.E. Robin L. Dunnigan, Ambassador of the United States to Georgia
In his opening remarks, George Melashvili set the stage for an in-depth dialogue, emphasizing the critical juncture at which the Eastern Partnership countries find themselves. He highlighted the region’s struggles with political instability, democratic backsliding, and external pressures, particularly in light of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
Drawing attention to Georgia’s youth, he lauded their courage and commitment to democracy and European values, stating:
“Democracy is not just a system of governance but a continuous struggle requiring vigilance and active participation.”
His moderation steered the conversation through thought-provoking questions about the strategic importance of the EaP region to the Euro-Atlantic community, the relevance of the Eastern Partnership framework, and the need to counter emerging authoritarian alliances. He also underscored the challenges posed by pervasive public distrust in electoral processes, particularly in Georgia, and the importance of fostering an environment for new political actors.

The discussions resonated deeply with the audience of GMF alumni, who represent a network of thought leaders and changemakers across various sectors. The panel underscored the need for sustained cooperation between the EaP region and the Euro-Atlantic community, with a particular focus on strengthening democratic institutions, countering disinformation, and ensuring regional security.
